When you must use a template
The 24-hour window decides everything.
- Inside the window: free-form messages, no template needed
- Outside the window: any business-initiated message must be a template
- A template send opens a new conversation and bills it by category
- Unapproved templates cannot be sent at all

How template variables work
The text is fixed; variables are the moving parts.
- Variables are written as {{1}}, {{2}}, and so on
- You fill in the values at send time (name, order number, date)
- Sample values like [NAME] instead of {{1}} cause rejection
- The final rendered message must still read naturally

The rules that get templates approved
Most rejections come from a predictable shortlist.
- No excessive capitalisation or urgency language
- No promotional buzzwords in utility templates
- Emoji are risky; plain text is safer
- Marketing templates need opt-in and a clear opt-out
- Category must match the message's real purpose

What approved templates cannot do
Approval locks the text.
- You cannot edit an approved template
- Wording changes require a new template and a new review
- Reusing approved templates is the efficient path: change variables, not text
- Wutt's template section flags rejection patterns before you submit
